Introduction: Genital warts (condyloma acuminata) frequently recur after treatment. This review compares recurrence rates of cryotherapy, laser ablation, and topical podophyllin. Methods: A meta-analysis of 19 RCTs (n=1,834) with ≥6 months follow-up. Inclusion required histologically confirmed HPV 6/11. Results: Recurrence rates at 6 months: cryotherapy 32%, laser ablation 28%, podophyllin 41% (p=0.01). Combination of cryotherapy plus imiquimod reduced recurrence to 19% (RR 0.58). Laser was most costly and required anesthesia. Discussion: Residual subclinical HPV in perilesional skin explains high recurrence. Immunomodulators added to destructive therapies improve clearance. Limitations include variable follow-up durations and lesion sizes. Conclusions: Destructive monotherapy yields unacceptably high recurrence. Combination with topical imiquimod or intralesional immunotherapy should be standard.
